Why Are OEM Ryzen Processors So Much Cheaper Than Boxed Versions?

I'm building a new PC and noticed that the Ryzen 7 7700 AM5 processor is listed at almost half the price as its boxed version. I've read that "OEM" means it comes without a box, just in a tray, but I found this big price difference a bit shocking. Is this a scam, or is it normal? I've previously purchased from the seller and they were trustworthy, but I also found similar prices on AliExpress. Can someone explain why OEM is cheaper and if I can trust these products? Are there risks involved?

It's true that with OEM processors, you usually get just the CPU without any packaging or warranty from the manufacturer. You'll need to rely on the seller's warranty, and if they don't accept returns, you're kind of stuck if something goes wrong. It's a gamble, but if the seller is reputable, it might be worth the savings.

The key difference is really in the warranty. With boxed CPUs, AMD handles the warranty claims easily, while with OEM, you're dealing with the seller directly. If they won’t help you out, AMD won’t do anything either.

All of these OEM processors are legit. Just make sure to buy from sellers with solid feedback, especially on platforms like AliExpress. As far as I know, no one is selling fake Ryzen CPUs there; instead, scam sellers might just send you something totally different. Buyer beware!

Thanks for the heads up! I’ll be cautious about who I buy from.

Just so you know, OEMs usually don't come with stock coolers or the manufacturer warranty. If you're buying from a local retailer, you might have some consumer protections. But if you're ordering from somewhere like China, there are definitely more risks involved. Just keep that in mind!

In Europe, OEM CPUs often have solid warranties regulated by law, like a two-year warranty. If they last that long, you’re likely in the clear. Just be aware that you won't get a stock cooler with many of these either, which could save you money depending on your cooler situation.

Good point! I forgot to mention that about coolers. Depending on what I’m using, that could affect my decision.
