Why Are Some Job Assessments So Strict on Technical Skills?

I've been applying for jobs lately, and I've noticed that some require candidates to complete strict assessments. These tests are puzzling because they explicitly forbid using AI tools, googling for information, or even accessing developer tools. I'm trying to understand the purpose behind these requirements. I believe that to be a good developer, it's essential to have skills like patience, perseverance, and the ability to find solutions when you're unsure or forgetful. One test I took involved creating a React app that fetched content from a URL (which was just an HTML page), then parsing the DOM to extract a hidden URL and fetching a word from it. Afterward, I had to display that word with a typewriter effect, timed perfectly. The catch was that I had only 30 minutes to complete it without any external help. What value are companies finding in this kind of testing? It feels like asking a carpenter to build a house in a week without tools. What are your thoughts?

I get the frustration; these tests don't reflect the actual skills needed on the job. Just remember, they're looking for a 'person' with the ability to think, not just a human calculator. As a developer myself, I wouldn't be able to complete tasks like that in such a confined manner either.

Honestly, those assessments sound ridiculous. They often stem from companies lacking qualified people to effectively evaluate an engineer's skills. It feels like they're trying to exclude anyone who respects themselves as a professional. Just know you're not alone in feeling this frustration; many share your concerns.

The strictness of these tests probably relates to the saturated job market after layoffs at major companies. Businesses want to filter the candidates and see who can perform under pressure and without assistance. They think this way they'll find top-notch talent. But from personal experience, even if you meet the challenge, that doesn’t guarantee an interview, which feels pretty unfair.
