Why Aren’t My Motherboard’s USB Ports Working in Windows?

I recently installed a new ASUS x870 f motherboard and tried to set up Windows 11. However, none of the USB ports worked during the installation, and my mouse RGB shut off. I updated the motherboard firmware via USB and tried again, but the issue persisted. All USB ports function perfectly in the BIOS, so I confirmed everything was enabled there. Instead of installing Windows via USB, I attempted to use a hard drive with Windows already installed, but it didn't work either. Interestingly, when I booted using Linux Mint, all USB ports worked fine. I also toggled the 'boot legacy' option in BIOS without any luck. I've spent over 15 hours troubleshooting, so I'm looking for any help!

Make sure you have the firmware updates installed from the motherboard's website. Those updates control USB functionality. You usually install them just like BIOS updates via a USB drive in the BIOS.

Should I look for those updates on the motherboard's support page? How do I install them?

That's odd! Normally, some USB ports should work with the default Windows drivers. Have you tried installing Windows 10 to see if that resolves the issue?

I tried Windows 10, and it had the same problem, even with Windows 7.

Did you install the motherboard drivers once you got into Windows? Sometimes you need a PS/2 keyboard for initial setup; that might also help since your USB ports aren't working.

There’s no PS/2 port on my motherboard, unfortunately, so I can't use that option.

Did you get your chipset drivers installed? Those can make a big difference if your system isn’t recognizing devices properly.

TechieDude42 -

What exactly are chipset drivers? Are they the same as the motherboard drivers?

You might want to uninstall the USB controller drivers in Windows. Download the latest chipset drivers from your motherboard's website and install those. When I set up my last motherboard, I had to do this because many devices weren't recognized initially in Device Manager.

I can't get into Windows because my USB ports aren't functioning!
