Why Can’t I Access Local Storage on My iPad Air in the Files App?

I'm having trouble with my iPad Air, which is running software version 12.5.7. I can't find the 'On My iPad' location in the Files app to save or copy files to local storage. I have plenty of space available—only using about 5.5 GB of my 32 GB. I've checked that location services are enabled in the General and Privacy settings. I can save notes in the 'On My iPad' location, but in the Files app, I only see options for iCloud and deleted files. I've done quite a bit of searching online for solutions but haven't found anything helpful yet. Any suggestions on what I can do?

It sounds like your iPad might be too outdated for some of the latest app features. Apple tends to develop their software in a way that older devices can struggle to keep up. As a workaround, you might want to try using third-party file management apps available in the App Store, as they sometimes offer ways to access local storage differently. Just keep in mind, some might not support older iPads fully because of the OS version.

I appreciate the suggestion! It’s a bummer since I do want to use the default apps when possible, but if third-party apps are the way to go, I’ll check them out.

Yeah, your iPad is definitely older, which will affect the functionality of newer apps. But don't stress too much! Just because the native Files app isn't showing it doesn't mean access is gone forever. Just try to stay updated on your apps and maybe consider upgrading if you want the best performance down the line.

Totally agree! Sometimes it feels like once devices get a bit older, they get left behind. But I really want to find a workaround, if not for this, then for future devices!
