Why can’t I edit Word documents on my iPad?

I purchased Microsoft Word as a one-time license, possibly a student version, and it's working perfectly fine on my PC linked to my Microsoft account. I also downloaded the app on my phone, logged in, and can edit documents on OneDrive without any issues. However, when I try to edit documents on my iPad after signing in, it prompts me to choose a plan. I'm not sure if this is a bug or if I really need a subscription to edit on my iPad. Can anyone clarify this for me?

Keep in mind, a one-time purchase usually covers only one device installation. Make sure to explore the limitations and options you have.

One-time purchases generally restrict you to a limited number of devices. You should still be able to log into the web version through a browser to access your documents.

Just a heads up, with a one-time purchase, you can usually only use the desktop app. The mobile app lets you edit if your screen is under 10.1 inches. Since your iPad is larger, you’ll need a Microsoft 365 Personal subscription, or you might consider using Apple Pages or Google Docs — they work well too unless your documents are really complex.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the insight!

The one-time purchase typically only includes the desktop apps. You could try accessing office.com and using the web versions for free, but keep in mind that some features might be limited.

How many mobile devices does your purchase cover? It might be worth checking the specifics of your license to see if there are restrictions on mobile use.
