Why Can’t I Get Steam and Proton to Work on Linux?

Hey everyone! I'm fairly new to Linux, using a dual boot setup with Windows 11 and Ubuntu 25.04. My system specs include an AMD 5800x3D CPU, 32 GB RAM, and an AMD 9070XT graphics card. I've been enjoying Linux for productivity but was excited to try gaming with Steam and Proton. Unfortunately, I've had no luck. I've tried launching games from a shared NTFS drive, copying them to the ext4 Linux drive, and downloading them fresh on Linux. I've also tested every version of Proton and used the 'gamemode: run' command, but no game will start except for Minecraft, which runs fine. I'm really frustrated and wondering if I'm missing something obvious? I have Windows installed mainly for gaming, but I'd love to get this working on Linux!

Hey! Have you considered removing the current Steam installation and trying the official .deb version from their website? It tends to work much better than the Snap version from the app store. It could solve your issues!

Just a quick question—are you launching your games directly from Steam? It’s important to run them through Steam to use Proton properly. If you downloaded Steam via the Ubuntu App Store, it might be running as a Snap package, which isn’t ideal.

I think I downloaded it from the App Store as a Snap, so that might be the problem. Thanks for the heads up!
