Why can’t I see my free space while trying to install Arch Linux?

I'm currently using Windows and I want to dual boot with Arch Linux because I'm interested in switching to Linux. When I boot from the Arch ISO, I can only see my USB stick with the installation image and my 1TB drive, where I've freed up 100GB of space for Arch. However, it only shows two partitions on the 1TB drive (130MB and 950GB) and doesn't recognize the unallocated space. I attempted to create a partition from that 100GB, but even then it doesn't show up. I've tried using commands like sudo partprobe, fdisk, cfdisk, and lsblk, but I'm stuck and honestly don't know what I'm doing wrong. Any help would be appreciated!

Have you checked the output of `lsblk -f`? It can provide detailed info about your filesystems, which might help pinpoint the issue.

If you're having trouble with the partitioning, that usually means Arch might not be the best fit for you at this moment. Try out something like Mint or Ubuntu first; they usually setup partitions without much hassle. Honestly, documenting your steps is key here—if you don't feel comfortable with the Arch documentation, it's best to start elsewhere.

Agreed, man! If you're confused now, it'll only get more complicated later on. Just stick with something simple for now.

I guess that makes sense. I just really wanted to learn everything about Linux.

I can't help but cringe a little when I see you trying to rely solely on ChatGPT for this. Just saying, it might be more beneficial to explore manual guides or forums dedicated to installations. If you’re thinking about sticking with Arch, consider using a more graphical partition tool like GParted—it's super user-friendly and can help visualize your partitions better before you proceed.

Such a good tip! A visual tool can make all the difference to see what’s going on.

Thanks! I think I’ll try GParted and see if that clears things up.

Hey, I have to ask – why go for Arch as your first distro? It's known to be a bit tricky. You might have better luck with something more beginner-friendly like Ubuntu or Mint, which could make this whole process a lot smoother. Just a thought!

Totally! Arch is cool, but starting with something like that can be overwhelming. It's always nice to get comfy with the basics first.

I get it, but I wanted to dive right into something powerful, you know?

You might find some great installation tips in the wiki! And remember to use an Ethernet connection for a smoother install. Also, don’t forget to remove your boot media after the installation is complete!
