Why can’t I start PowerShell from the address bar in Windows 10 anymore?

I've noticed something weird: when I type "powershell" in the address bar of Windows 10's File Explorer and hit enter, it doesn't launch PowerShell like it used to. Instead, it navigates to This PC -> Documents -> Powershell. This started happening after a recent update where I saw that familiar first-time setup screen that says, "let's spend some time setting up your computer." Typing "powershell.exe" does work, so it's not the end of the world, but I'm curious if anyone knows what changed?

It seems like this issue occurs with any folder in your Documents, and it might have to do with updates since Windows 7. You probably just didn't notice it until now, especially since you may have created a Powershell folder after installing PowerShell 7. It’s a little bit of a quirk with how it interprets your input.

I’ve never seen this happen on my Windows machines. I’m on PowerShell 5.1, and the old command terminal still opens fine.

The address bar in File Explorer can interpret your commands differently now. You can be more specific by typing "powershell.exe" to open Windows PowerShell or just "pwsh" for PowerShell 7 if you have it installed. This should help avoid the navigation issue you're seeing.

Yeah, it looks like the recent update to explorer.exe has altered how it handles these commands. It’s causing some confusion.

Honestly, it seems like Microsoft is just making changes for the sake of it. They're starting to remind me of how Google changed things up a lot a while back. It's frustrating, and I’m really close to giving up on both of them.

I understand where you're coming from. My only real issue with Microsoft lately is the nagging for Windows 11.
