Why can’t my PC run a memory diagnostic properly?

I've been having some issues with my PC randomly shutting down and restarting. To troubleshoot, I wanted to run a memory diagnostic to check if the RAM is the problem, but it keeps getting stuck at 21%. Whenever I try to interact with it, the system crashes and restarts. Does this likely mean I need to replace the RAM? Any help would be appreciated! I'm currently on Windows 11.

If you're having trouble doing the tests with Windows, you might want to consider downloading the Memtest86 ISO, creating a USB with Rufus, and letting it stress test your RAM overnight. It checks every single bit which is thorough.

Make sure to remove all RAM sticks except one and test them individually. Also, check your Event Viewer for any errors that might give you more insight. I had the same issue in the past, and it turned out to be a faulty RAM stick after running a memtest.

What memory test are you trying to run? Have you considered creating a Memtest86 USB drive from memtest.org? Some BIOS have built-in diagnostics, too. If you can't get the tests to run smoothly, try resetting any performance settings and run the memory at its default speed. If you have multiple RAM sticks, test them one by one in different slots. If one keeps failing, then it’s likely the culprit!
