I recently found my Apple account locked out of nowhere while I was using my phone. The message says it was locked for "security reasons." Now, it gives me the option to verify my identity through an email link or security questions, but I can't access my email and I don't remember the answers to the security questions either. Since I'm the original owner and have paid for my devices, shouldn't I be able to access my own phones? When I called Apple for help, they told me they couldn't assist because I don't have access to the email or the security question answers, even though I can prove I purchased the devices. Isn't proof of purchase enough? I have an iPhone 12 and an iPhone 8 attached to this account, so why can't they help me?

It sounds like this situation isn't as random as it seems. There’s likely a reason your account got locked, even if you're not aware of it. I'm curious why you don’t have access to your email or remember your security questions. That could complicate things.
I had to use my brother's old email when I created the account back on my iPhone 5, and I honestly didn’t think the security questions were that important at the time. Now I regret that choice.
You might want to try a factory reset on your devices if you have proof of purchase. It should allow you to regain access to your account, but keep in mind that it’ll erase all your data.
I did submit my proof of purchase, and they approved my request to remove the activation lock. However, when I tried to sign out to change the account, it still said my account was locked! They said it’s because of the security questions and email access I can't provide.
You're definitely not the only one who's faced this issue. Apple shouldn’t have locked your account out of the blue like that. It’s really frustrating when you’re not trying to log in from different devices and suddenly face this locks.
The lady at Apple told me they recently switched away from security questions for older accounts because so many people forget them. It seems like you're not alone in this.
