I took my laptop in for some cleaning and to have the thermal paste changed, but now my antivirus software (Avast) seems to be uninstalled. Is there any explanation for this?

Have you asked the repair service about it? They should provide you with a report of what was done during servicing. It's worth checking in with them to understand what happened to your antivirus.
You might be better off without it, honestly. Some people have had their systems run just fine without Avast and felt that Windows Defender does the job well enough.
If you were using the free version of Avast, they might have seen it as part of the cleanup process and just removed it. Honestly, Windows Defender has improved a lot and might be a safer bet these days anyway.
