I was watching John Wick 3, which I purchased on Google Play. I've seen it so many times without issues, but suddenly tonight, the burned-in subtitles are gone. Just to clarify, I'm talking about the burned-in subtitles that are part of the video itself, not the ones you can toggle from the subtitles button. I'm really confused because I didn't know it was possible to make burned-in subtitles disappear! I've tried clearing cookies and cache, restarting sync, and haven't added any new extensions. Although I still have the burned-in subtitles for John Wick 4, they're just not showing up for the third movie. Has anyone else experienced this and knows how to fix it?

Most movies you buy don’t usually come with burned-in subtitles. If you recall purchasing it, you likely didn’t have an option for a version with permanent subtitles. I’ve only seen that kind of subtitle in bootleg films or occasionally in foreign movies. Maybe there's a setting on your app that's defaulting to show subs when they shouldn’t be.
That’s not entirely accurate. My UHD copies of the LOTR movies have hard-encoded subtitles for non-human dialogue, especially for Elvish parts.
