Why Did My Ethernet Speed Drop to 100 Mbps After a Few Days?

I've got a Verizon Fios gigabit network set up in my home. The basic layout is: the incoming cable connects to a router, which then goes to an LG108S switch. From the switch, one cable goes to the ethernet port in my bedroom and then connects to an LG105S switch. This new switch has two outputs: one goes to a Wi-Fi extender, and the other one connects to my PC. When I was using Wi-Fi, I wasn't having any issues, but after adding a cable from the extender to the PC, my ethernet speed capped at 100 Mbps. After testing with a different cable, the speed briefly jumped to 1000 Mbps. I also found that my PC takes a long time to recognize the network at startup. To fix things, I added an LGS105S switch before the extender, which initially worked and gave me 1000 Mbps. However, after a few days, the speed dropped back to 100 Mbps. I've always kept my Speed and Duplex settings on Auto Negotiation, but if I set it to 1 Gbps, my PC can't recognize the network. Right now, I'm back to connecting through the extender to get that 1000 Mbps with Auto Negotiation. What could be causing the speed to drop after a few days without making any changes?

It might be a power issue. Check your power supply or the outlet where your switch is plugged in. Also, don’t forget to look for any firmware updates that could help with your network setup.

Are you suggesting I check the outlet where the PC is plugged in or the switch?

Not all ethernet cables are created equal. You should try out different types of cables, and maybe even see if switching out the Network Interface Card (NIC) helps. Sometimes, the hardware can be the issue.
