Why Did My Headphones Connect to My Girlfriend’s Phone?

So I have these wired headphones (budi EP20L), and when I plugged them into my iPhone 7 to listen to a voice note, they somehow connected to my girlfriend's iPhone 15 instead. The weird part is that these headphones don't have any Bluetooth or wireless features, yet my phone recognized them as AirPods and prompted me to connect. My girlfriend didn't see any pop-up on her phone to connect, and it's all really strange.

There have been bizarre tech issues lately, like our laptops acting weird (mouse cursors moving on their own, Powershell launching randomly) and even the TV turning on by itself! We're really freaked out about this. I'm worried our phones might be tapped, especially since the headphones can control calls and music. Plus, we don't even remember buying them; we just found them while cleaning. Can anyone shed some light on how this happened and if we need to be concerned about spyware or anything else?

It's possible some cheap manufacturers create wired earbuds that can pull power from a device but connect via Bluetooth, leaving you with that kind of confusion. I recommend checking the headphone model online to see if this is a possibility. Also, with the odd behavior from your computers, it sounds like your devices could be compromised. It's a good idea to troubleshoot that issue separately before jumping to conclusions about the headphones.

Seriously, it's silly they don't just make wired ones connect directly. But yeah, you should just turn off Bluetooth on your girlfriend's phone to make sure there's no link.

If you want to identify the headphones, there should be a way to see all Bluetooth connections on your iPhone. It might help clear things up.

Honestly, you can’t really connect wired phones to Bluetooth without both devices opting in first. Wired headphones should not have the ability to link up wirelessly like that. It’s definitely odd, and your worries are valid. I’d look at your other tech issues because they seem related—maybe something is indeed compromised.

Honestly, your best bet is to consider the worst-case scenario and disconnect everything from the internet right away. Change all of your passwords and switch to a clean device on an entirely separate network. Stay safe!

Bluetooth typically works only within close proximity, so having two phones unexpectedly connect doesn't add up unless there's something else at play. Unplug your router just in case; it sounds like you might be dealing with something bigger here.

Definitely! After unplugging the router, check if the issue persists on cellular too. If anything bizarre continues, I'd suggest serious precautions.
