Why Did My New Laptop Suddenly Drop in Performance?

I just got my hands on a brand new ASUS TUF Gaming F16 featuring an RTX 5060 8GB, Intel Core i5-14450HX, and 16GB DDR5 RAM. It was running games smoothly with great framerates until today when I noticed a significant drop in performance. A less demanding game that used to run well started to stutter. I thought it was because I might have left some CAD software open, but then I tried playing Black Myth: Wukong, which previously ran at 60–70 FPS, and now it's barely hitting 30 FPS. This drop seems consistent across other games too.

I've made no changes to my system or game settings, as far as I can remember, and recently installed a driver update while launching a game that barely ran. I also did an update through MyASUS that required a restart, and there didn't seem to be anything using up resources like CPU, RAM, or GPU while I was playing. I even ran an antivirus scan that came back clean. What could possibly be wrong, and is it possible that I could have damaged my GPU by mistake?

You might want to double-check your power profile settings. Sometimes, the laptop can default to a power-saving mode that throttles performance. Also, make sure that the right GPU is being utilized for your games. A quick check in the device manager can help confirm if your driver is installed correctly. I doubt you’ve damaged your GPU from regular use though, that’s typically very hard to do.

That recent Windows update can really mess with performance for some people. It’s worth looking into if you can roll back that update or at least check if there are any fixes available.

Running an antivirus scan is a good start! Just as a heads up, even after the scan, sometimes malware can be tricky, but you mentioned everything was clear. So maybe it's just software or driver issues. Did you check if there are any updates for the game itself?
