Why Did My PC Restart Without Warning?

I think I've figured out why my PC restarted unexpectedly, but I'm having a hard time understanding the Windows explanation. I checked the event viewer and it says: "The process C:WINDOWSsystem32svchost.exe (DESKTOP-BAQ9ASN) has initiated the restart of computer DESKTOP-BAQ9ASN on behalf of user NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM for the following reason: Operating System: Service pack (Planned)." Can someone explain what this means? Also, who is NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM? This is my personal computer, so I expected to have control over when it restarts. Just to share more context, I've had some strange behavior lately, like the screen going black and icons shrinking, which made me worry about malware, but my antivirus hasn't detected anything. I'm really frustrated because I restarted my PC just 8 hours earlier to avoid disruptions. I want to figure out how to prevent unexpected restarts like this and if possible, make sure I get a warning before it happens. Any help would be appreciated!

Hey there! It sounds like the restarting issue is related to Windows updates, specifically the 'svchost.exe' process. NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM is just the system account that Windows uses for operations, so you shouldn't worry about it being malware or anything. The "Service pack (Planned)" message means your system was performing an update that required a reboot.

In Windows Update settings—under Update & Security—you'll find options to control restarts. Look for 'Restart this device as soon as possible' and make sure it's turned off to prevent these surprise restarts. You should also have the option to get notifications before updates require a restart, so check that too!

Thanks for the tips! I actually checked for updates right before I manually restarted, and it showed I was up to date. It feels like they’re misleading me with the notifications. What’s the best way to confirm that I won't get surprised by a restart again?
