Why Did My RAM Speed Double After Upgrading My CPU?

I recently upgraded my CPU from an R5 3600 to an R7 5700x, and I kept everything else the same, including my 16GB DDR4 RAM set with the same XMP profile. After running Memtest, I noticed a huge jump in memory speed from 19.5 GB/s to 42.8 GB/s! I'm not complaining at all, but I'm really curious about why this happened and what advantages I might see with my new setup, especially regarding gaming performance.

I upgraded my CPU too and had to reset the BIOS after. I had my RAM set incorrectly, which really impacted my speeds. Make sure you're set to gear 1 (1:1).

What tool did you use to benchmark memory speed? Some benchmarks have had bugs that lead to inflated results under certain conditions.

I used Memtest, but I think it might still have some quirks.

The RAM bandwidth relies on the channel configuration, so if you were in single-channel mode, your max isn't fully utilized. Make sure you have dual-channel set up for optimal performance!

It sounds like the XMP settings might work better on the 5700, allowing for a 1:1 memory controller to frequency ratio. Your previous CPU might have been dropping it to a 1:2 ratio, affecting performance.

I’m using Crucial Ballistics Sport LT Gray RAM at 2400 MHz with a 1600 MHz XMP profile. Could that be affecting things?

Yeah, it's possible! Ryzen 3000/5000 CPUs generally max out around 1600-2000 FCLK, so if yours was running lower, that might have capped your speeds.

Your RAM speed might not have actually doubled; it could be a result of previous misconfigurations. Certain Ryzen 3000 chips can skew benchmarks, leading to misleading numbers. It’s worth checking if your settings were off before the upgrade!

I did reset the CMOS and enable XMP again, so maybe that fixed an issue it had before.
