Why did these 6 keys on my keyboard stop working overnight?

I woke up this morning to find that six keys on my keyboard just aren't working anymore. The keys that are affected are F3, 4, R, F, V, and F8. They were perfectly fine yesterday. I checked with another keyboard that was also malfunctioning, and I could type the number 4 with that one, which makes me think my keyboard just suddenly stopped functioning without any reason. I've already tried reinstalling the drivers, restarting my computer, and unplugging it, but nothing seems to help. This keyboard is only about a year old, so I'm really bummed that it just gave out overnight.

How exactly is your keyboard connected? Is it wireless with a dongle, Bluetooth, or wired? If it's a dongle or wired, does it connect straight to your computer, or is it through a USB hub? If it’s the latter, make sure everything powers off completely. A simple reboot might not cut it if the USB state is still active.

Sounds like liquid damage to me. If that’s the case, you might just need to replace the keyboard. The software and drivers probably aren't the issue here.

But where would the liquid even come from?

Did you spill something on your keyboard, or do you sweat a lot while using it? Sometimes liquid damage can cause keys to stop working out of the blue. Just wondering if you might’ve missed anything like that!

No spills at all! Everything was fine last night, then I woke up and the keys just wouldn't respond.

If it's just due to regular wear and tear, you might be eligible for a free repair or even a replacement. In many places, consumer rights say products should last a good amount of time—like 5 to 6 years. Just keep in mind that once a product is about a year old, proving it was faulty can be tricky, unless it has an extended warranty.

You could also try plugging in a different keyboard. If that one works fine, then it looks like yours is broken and you'll need to get a replacement!

Try doing a full discharge of your computer: shut it down, unplug it from the power source, press and hold the power button for 10 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on again. Test your keyboard after that. If it's still not working, it's likely time to replace it.
