Why do I keep getting a ‘no default mail client’ error when opening MSG files in Outlook?

I'm having a frustrating issue with Outlook on Windows 11. Whenever I click on a saved MSG file—like one I saved to my desktop—I get this annoying error message that says, "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client." I know I have a mail client set as default, so I'm not sure what's going on. I've noticed that if the Preview pane is enabled when I right-click in Explorer, this error pops up, but if I disable it, the error goes away. Has anyone found a way to fix this? I really don't want to keep the Preview pane off since this issue has apparently been around for a decade!

Have you double-checked your default mail client settings? It’s important to set it as the default in Windows File Explorer, not just in Outlook. Sometimes it can be tricky to find the right spot for that setting.

Yeah, I made sure to set it through both Settings > Apps > Default Apps and also using the right-click 'Open With' option for MSG files. It's weird because even if I set it to something like Firefox, I still get the Outlook prompt!
