Why Do My USB 3.0 File Transfers Start Fast But Then Slow Down?

Hey everyone! I'm using a 2020 MacBook Pro running Windows, and I've noticed that when I transfer files to my 1TB external SSD, the speed starts off really quick—like at around 1GB/s when I have it set to performance mode—but eventually it slows down to around 30MB/s or even lower. Is there something I can do to fix this? Any insights?

You might also want to check if your USB port and cable are USB 3.0 or higher. Sometimes the performance can drop if there are compatibility issues. Also, if the SSD heats up during transfer, it could throttle itself to prevent overheating.

Thanks! I didn't consider that thermal throttling could be a factor. I'll keep an eye on the drive temperature during transfers.

It sounds like you're experiencing typical caching behavior. At first, the drive caches data really quickly, but once that cache fills up, the transfer speed drops to the drive's sustainable write speed. If you’re transferring a lot of small files instead of big ones, that could also slow things down significantly.
