Why do videos and pictures look blurry on my new 27″ 2K monitor?

I recently bought a 27-inch 2K (1440p) monitor and I'm a bit confused about its performance. While everything looks sharp with desktop tasks - text and UI are clear, and all my drivers are updated with the correct resolution of 2560x1440 and HDR enabled - videos and pictures appear blurry or low-quality. For instance, a 1080p YouTube video seems to look like it's only 480p. Regular photos also seem muddy or off. I've checked my GPU drivers, verified Windows scaling and resolution, and even tried different browsers and video players but nothing changes. Additionally, I keep getting warnings about HDR being unavailable or having issues when I access the HDR settings. Oddly, Windows Update indicates I need a newer version, but I can't find any updates even though everything shows as current. So, I'm wondering if this could be a bug with Windows or HDR, an issue with video scaling, or if anyone else has experienced similar problems with a 2K monitor where the video quality is disappointing. Any insights would be appreciated!

This seems to be a common issue with 1440p monitors when it comes to media playback. Many people find that 1080p content doesn’t upscale well and appears blurry due to scaling imperfections. It’s like a dirty secret of having higher resolutions! So don't be too surprised if 1080p videos don’t look as sharp.

Exactly! I just want my YouTube videos to look decent too. It’s frustrating when 720p feels like 240p!

Just a heads up, there’s some confusion around terminology. 2K usually refers to resolutions like 2048x1080, and what you’re calling 2K is often referred to as QHD (1440p). This can cause misunderstandings about what to expect from your monitor’s performance.

I just got a 27" 2K too, and I haven't faced this problem. Are you seeing this across all types of content? Games at 1440p look great, but anything lower maybe does come out a little blurry. Also, have you tried turning off HDR? That might help clarify what's going on with your monitor settings.

Good point! Sometimes HDR settings can cause more issues than they solve. It's worth a try.
