Why Does 60 FPS Look Choppy on My New Laptop?

Hey everyone! I recently got a new laptop that boasts better hardware and has a refresh rate of 120Hz instead of 60Hz. However, I've been experiencing an odd issue where games running at 60 FPS look choppy, almost like they're only at 30 FPS. I've tried adjusting the refresh rate and display settings, but nothing seems to help. I'd really appreciate any advice or insights you might have! If you need my specs, feel free to ask in the comments.

Did you go from a 60Hz to a 120Hz display? Your perception might be off since it’s possible to get used to the higher refresh rate. Games at 60 FPS can feel choppier once you’re accustomed to 120Hz or even 240Hz monitors.

Yeah, I switched from 60 to 120Hz. But it's strange because even when I watch videos or see my sibling play at 60 FPS, it looks smooth to me.

It's worth checking if you're genuinely hitting 60 FPS with a monitoring tool. Sometimes, the in-game frame rate display can be misleading. You can use MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner to get a more accurate reading.

I haven’t tried using that yet, but in the game, it says I’m getting 60 FPS. I’ll definitely look into using MSI or RivaTuner for a better check.

Have you looked into whether your laptop supports G-Sync? If it does, enabling that could help smooth things out. Also, if your laptop has an OLED display, it might look choppier at lower frame rates simply due to the instant pixel response time of the display.

No, I don’t have G-Sync or an OLED display. I wanted to try G-Sync, but the option isn’t available for me.
