Why does ChatGPT misunderstand public transport distances?

I've been chatting with ChatGPT about public transport in my city, and I'm really frustrated. Whenever we discuss things like how far a bus or tram travels between stops—say, 800 meters—ChatGPT responds with things like, "800 meters isn't too close or too far; it's comfortable for pedestrians." I find this baffling. When I question its reasoning, it insists that walking 800 meters isn't too hard for people. It seems to think that people walk right next to buses, which makes no sense to me! Is it really that clueless? Can't the database recognize something so straightforward? I can't be the only one who experiences this, right?

Lol! I get you, but 800 meters does sound like a decent walk for a healthy person. But yeah, it really shouldn't assume everyone is suited for that just because they can walk!

True, but that kind of misses the essence of your frustration about vehicles! You're not supposed to be hoofing it, right?

That distance definitely hits differently depending on the time of day and circumstances! While it might seem reasonable numerically, the experiences people have walking that distance aren't just about the meters. There’s context involved that the AI doesn’t capture, like weather or how the day is going. As for the AI, it probably just needs more context.

Exactly! It's not just about the distance, but also about the vibe of the journey. Hope it learns more about these subtleties!

It doesn’t really have a solid grasp of average distances in relation to human experience, it just sees numbers. If you want it to understand more, you might need to give it a framework to operate from, something like setting ground rules for distance limits in a conversation first.

That’s a good approach! But it’s frustrating still—why can’t it just use common sense?

It sounds like ChatGPT is responding based on a generalized understanding of distances. It doesn't really have the ability to grasp the context of public transport like we do. 800 meters could be a quick stroll for some, but when you're waiting for a bus, that's a whole different story. You're right; its perspective is a bit off!

Totally get that! Seems like it's missing the point that public transport is all about getting into a vehicle, not just walking next to it. It's frustrating!

Honestly, it only reflects the average opinion it’s been trained on. For some, 800 meters might be manageable, but you’re right in thinking that it doesn’t consider the logistics of using transit. If you want it to acknowledge distances differently, you might have to teach it your specific perspective.

That makes sense, but why can’t it just get the basics right? It's like it doesn’t even understand the purpose of bus stops.
