Why Does My Asus ZenBook 13 Turn Off When the Charger Is Unplugged?

I'm having a tough time with my Asus ZenBook 13. It shuts down almost immediately whenever I unplug the charger. I tried a few things to fix it, like setting the laptop to Maximum Lifespan mode, which prevents it from charging beyond 60%, and changing the maximum processor state to 20% while on battery. However, now when I turn it on with the charger plugged in, it either goes into a recovery mode or just shuts down shortly after reaching the home screen. If I try to power it on while it's charging, the screen stays black but the keyboard lights up. Anyone have any ideas on how to get this laptop back to normal?

If the battery is still reading 100% when plugged in but doesn’t hold a charge, the issue is likely with the battery itself. You might need to replace it. There are guides and resources online specifically for replacing the battery on the ZenBook 13 if that's the route you need to take.

It sounds like you might need to check the battery health. Usually, you can find the battery’s original capacity and current capacity online or through your laptop’s settings. It’s possible that your battery is failing, which can cause issues like shutting down too quickly. You might want to look into using CMD or the BIOS to get this info if the laptop powers off too quickly for the usual methods.

I get that! It’s super frustrating when you can’t even log in. If you’re seeing that the full charge capacity is much lower than the design capacity, that’s typically a sign the battery is on its last legs. But I totally understand that right now you just want to access your files before you tackle the battery issue.

Don’t forget to check for any firmware or driver updates for your laptop. Sometimes system updates fix underlying issues with hardware. Just a quick search on the Asus website could lead you to some helpful resources.

Have you tried booting into safe mode? If you can get into that mode while it’s plugged in, you might be able to do some troubleshooting without the laptop shutting down. Sometimes that helps diagnose what’s going wrong with the startup process.
