Why Does My GPU Stop Working When I Start a Game?

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a pickle. Whenever I launch any game, my GPU just stops working. I can hear the game running in the background, but there's no visual output, and it looks like my GPU is shutting down.

I've already purchased a new power supply and connected all the necessary cables, but the issue persists. I've also made sure that all my drivers are updated.

Here's the breakdown of my setup:
- Motherboard: ASUS ROG CROSSHAIR VII HERO (Wi-Fi), Socket AM4, ATX, AMD X470
- GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Founders Edition
- Power Supply: Corsair RM1000e (1000W)
- RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (4×8 GB) DDR4 3000 MHz
- Monitor: MSI Optix MAG281URF 4K IPS Gaming Monitor

I would really appreciate any advice or insights on what might be going wrong!

Have you tried recording your FPS while gaming? It might help you see if your frames drop when the GPU fails. I suspect this is a GPU issue, but trying a different monitor could also be beneficial just to rule that out.

Unfortunately, the GPU shuts down as soon as I start any game or even a stress test. The fans and lights just go off completely.

First off, what version of Nvidia drivers are you using? From my experience, Nvidia's drivers have been pretty glitchy lately. I have a 3070Ti, and the only stable driver for me was 566.36. Try rolling back to the last working driver for you, and maybe give 566.36 a shot to see if it solves the problem.

I'm currently on the latest version, 581.80. I’ll try reverting to the previous version and see if that helps.

Just curious—how old are your components? Is this a used PC you've just picked up? If the hardware is older, it could be contributing to the issue. I had a similar problem that turned out to be related to aging parts.

Yeah, this is my old setup. I thought the issue was my 700W PSU being too weak for the GPU, so I replaced it, but the problem remains. Could it be that the GPU itself is faulty?

Make sure your power cables are definitely connected properly to the PSU. Did you notice any red lights on the GPU when it fails? That might give you a hint on what's going on.

I've checked the cables, and I don’t see any red lights on the GPU. It just shuts down completely, which makes me think it might be faulty.
