Why Does My Laptop Keep Saying It’s Full with 12 GB of Space?

I'm using Windows 11 on an HP Pavilion x360 laptop with a 1TB drive and 16GB of RAM. My drive shows that I have 12 GB of free space, yet it keeps warning me that it's full every few days, even though I'm not downloading anything. I regularly use CCleaner to delete unnecessary files, and my drivers and Windows updates are all current. Can anyone help me figure out what's going on?

With only 12GB left on a 1TB drive, your system may be struggling to manage temporary files and virtual memory. This can cause performance issues and the constant 'full' warnings. Cleaning out your Temp folder might help. Also, keeping around 10-15% of your drive free is recommended for optimal SSD performance if that’s what you have.

Would restarting the laptop clear out the temp files too?

Yes, a restart can help clear some temporary files, but it’s good to manually clean out the Temp folder regularly.

If your laptop is an SSD, try disabling features like hibernation or moving the pagefile to free up more space. Also, don't forget to empty the recycle bin after making deletions to ensure the space is actually cleared.

It sounds like your system is allocating drive space for additional RAM because your available RAM is limited. I recommend checking your virtual memory settings. Increasing this allocation could resolve your issues by freeing up more usable drive space.

I changed the virtual memory settings, and it doubled my free space to 24GB! My laptop is running a lot smoother now. Thanks for the advice!

Great to hear! That should definitely improve performance.

You should consider freeing up more space by uninstalling programs you rarely use or moving files to cloud storage or a USB drive. Having enough free space is crucial for your laptop’s performance and lifespan, especially if it's running on an SSD.

Having just 12GB free isn't ideal for Windows, especially since updates and temp files can eat up space without you realizing it. You might want to try using tools like WinDirStat or WizTree to see what's hogging your drive's space. Ideally, keeping at least 50-100GB free will help prevent these issues from popping up.

Thanks for the tip! Do those tools help with finding hidden files too?

GizmoGuru42 -

Absolutely! They can show you where all your space is going, including those sneaky hidden files.
