Why Does My Laptop’s Storage Keep Getting Used Up Without Downloading Anything?

I'm a 21-year-old who recently got my first laptop for college, and I'm struggling with a storage issue. Lately, I've noticed that my C Drive storage decreases even when I haven't downloaded anything. For example, I had only 2GB left, so I freed up some space by moving videos and photos to Google Drive and then deleting them from my laptop. This brought my available space to nearly 9GB. However, after trying to clear temporary files, I expected my available space to hit 10GB but it actually dropped to 7.33GB instead. I'm perplexed by why this keeps happening, especially since I thought I should have more than just 2GB available after deleting files weeks ago. I'm in college, so upgrading storage isn't an option right now. Any tips or solutions would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like your C Drive is naturally filling up due to several factors, like Windows storing temporary files, backups, and the way software installs. Even if you install programs on a different drive, some files still end up on the C Drive. It's recommended to consider doing a full reinstall of Windows once a year to clear out unnecessary files and start fresh, but if you're not familiar with that, it might be a bigger hassle than you're looking for. Just keep an eye on what's using up your space and clean up regularly!

A 2-8GB fluctuation in available space isn't too unusual. Your laptop probably uses temporary storage for things like updates and caches, which can add up. Just to let you know, your Huawei MateBook D 15 has 256GB of total storage, which is decent, but managing space will be crucial, especially since Windows needs some wiggle room to operate smoothly.

Since Windows 8, restore points can take up a lot of space. If your laptop's running fine, you can try running Disk Cleanup and getting rid of older restore points, keeping only the most recent one. This should free up some space back on your drive!

Did you happen to get a budget laptop with minimal storage? It's common for cheaper models to have less space. If you're running low, Windows operates best with more than 10GB free. Have you seen any alerts from Windows about needing more space?
