Why does my monitor go mostly black at 144Hz?

I recently got an AOC G2490W1G4, a 1920x1080p 144Hz IPS monitor. I noticed a problem where it works fine at 120Hz but there are faint horizontal white lines. However, when I switch to 144Hz, about 90% of the screen goes black. On boot-up, I see green and red horizontal lines moving up and down before my desktop shows up. My PC specs are a 7800x3d, RX 7900XT, and 32 GB of DDR5 RAM. I'm using a DisplayPort cable. Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

This sounds like a possible compatibility issue between your graphics card and the monitor at higher refresh rates. It's not uncommon for certain setups to have trouble at 144Hz, especially if the cable isn't holding up properly or if there's a signal processing bug. Have you tried a different DisplayPort cable? Also, make sure your graphics drivers are up to date; sometimes that can fix weird display issues.

Yeah, definitely check your cable first. I've had similar issues with a bad DP cable causing flickering and colors to go crazy.

Your monitor might be struggling to handle the 144Hz refresh rate due to possibly being overclocked. If you have the option in your monitor's settings, try adjusting the refresh rate down just a notch to see if it stabilizes. Another option could be to check the monitor's firmware to ensure it's up to date, which can help resolve these types of issues too.

Good call! Updating can really make a difference. I had similar flickering that got fixed with a firmware update.

I had a cheap monitor that did something similar at higher refresh rates; it was frustrating. It worked well at 120Hz but flickered at 165Hz. It might be a sign that the monitor isn't performing as expected at 144Hz; switching to 120Hz or getting a more reliable monitor might be the best bet if the issues persist.
