Hey everyone, I'm hoping to get some feedback and opinions on a strange issue I've been dealing with. For the last couple of months, I've noticed that my PC freezes every time I stand up, sit down, or adjust my position in my chair. It's quite frustrating!
This happens about 70% of the time—my monitors go black for a second, the display returns, but my entire system is frozen. I can't use my mouse or keyboard, and shortcuts like Ctrl+Windows+Shift+B to reset the GPU don't work. The only way to get it going again is by restarting my PC.
I've checked all my connections and even reseated my GPU and RAM, but the issue persists. This happens with various programs, whether I'm gaming or just browsing the web.
I've had my PC for around four years, and this issue started a couple of months after I bought a new IKEA chair. I'm skeptical that a chair could cause this, but I'm starting to run out of explanations.
Here's a quick rundown of my setup:
- AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
- NZXT Kraken X63 RGB CPU Cooler
- ASUS ROG STRIX B550-E GAMING Motherboard
- 16 GB G.Skill Trident Z Neo RAM
- 1 TB Seagate FireCuda SSD
- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070
- Corsair RM850 PSU
My chair (IKEA GRUPPSPEL) cost me $300, and I really want to make sure it's the source of this issue before I consider replacing it. Has anyone else experienced something similar? Did switching out the chair resolve the problem? Or does anyone know what might be causing this?

Your issue might actually be related to static electricity. Try wearing rubber gloves next time you use your PC or cover your chair with a different material to see if that helps.
A simple blanket could work. It might help reduce any static buildup.
Is your computer on your desk or the floor? Sometimes where the PC is situated can affect this sort of issue, especially if it's on the floor where there's more potential for static.
This is a known issue with the IKEA Markus chair. If that's what's causing it, I suggest grounding the chair itself to see if it alleviates the problem.
It sounds like there could be a loose connection somewhere that gets jostled when you move. Have you considered trying not just a different chair, but maybe doing some movements by the computer to see if the issue arises then?
I’ve checked everything, and it only seems to happen with the chair. I could try some light movements near it though.
I've had a similar problem where my monitors would black out when I moved, and it turned out to be a charge from the chair affecting the video output. Tread carefully with that IKEA chair; it might be the culprit!

Interesting thought! I might have to try that. What material do you think would be best for covering the chair?
