Why Does My PC Keep Shutting Down When I Game?

I've been having this annoying issue where my PC just shuts down while I'm gaming, especially during intense moments. For instance, when I'm playing Elden Ring or Apex Legends, it crashes right when there's a lot happening on screen, like Bangalore's ult – it feels like my PC just gets nuked. I've run a 5-minute OCCT stress test on my CPU and didn't find any errors, but I'm not sure if it's a temperature issue or something with the power supply, although my temps look fine. Another thing worth mentioning is that when I'm downloading games, my disk usage shoots up to 100% in Task Manager, causing everything to lag and freeze, including Discord and my web browser. Any thoughts on what could be causing these shutdowns?

What’s the speed and voltage of your RAM? You might need to lower the speed or adjust the voltage to stabilize things.

What are the specs of your CPU, GPU, and PSU? Knowing those can help narrow down potential issues.

GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT, CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5500, and I’m not sure about the PSU.

If you’re using an AMD GPU, maybe consider switching to NVIDIA. Some users say it can help with stability issues.

I’m currently on the AMD Ryzen 5 5500, though.

It sounds like your power supply might be the culprit here. When your system draws a lot of power during intense gaming sessions, a weak power supply can cause shutdowns to protect your hardware.

I was worried about that too since power supplies can be pricey!

Have you tweaked any PBO values? I’d recommend running an OCCT power test to max out your components' power draw. If it still shuts down while gaming, consider resetting your BIOS to default.

How long do you think I should run the power test?

I had something similar happen, where my PC would restart randomly while gaming. I went through and reconnected everything, and simply reseating my RAM fixed it! You might want to try doing that, especially if you move your PC around often.

Thanks, I’ll give that a shot! Every little bit helps.
