Why Does My PC Only Work Outside the Case?

Hey everyone! I recently built a PC, and it has been working fine for about a week. However, for the past four days, it will only turn on when everything is set up outside the case. I even bought a new 500W power supply with Active PFC and 80 Plus certification, and I replaced the motherboard thinking it might have been a short circuit. I also changed the CPU, power supply, and RAM just to rule out any issues.

When I set everything up on a test bench, it works perfectly fine, but as soon as I try to assemble it inside the case, I get an electric shock and the system won't start. I also can't get it to turn on by shorting the power switch with a screwdriver, so I'm confident that the power button isn't the issue. The case itself seems to give a shock when everything is connected, but the motherboard refuses to power on.

Here's my setup: Xeon E3 1220 V2, H61 Bluecase motherboard, 16GB RAM, and the EVGA 500W 80 Plus PSU. I've tried different power outlets, but nothing seems to work. Any thoughts on what's going wrong?

Yep, definitely sounds like a standoff problem. Make sure you’re not missing one or have an extra one that's in the wrong spot. Wouldn’t hurt to inspect the setup closely!

Just to double-check, can you confirm that there isn’t an extra standoff that's accidentally grounding the board? Those can be tricky sometimes. Missing or adding one could definitely cause these issues.

It sounds like you might have a short or bridge somewhere. Check for any pins or wires that could be touching the metal case. Also, make sure there aren't any extra standoffs in the case that might be grounding out the motherboard.

I was thinking the same about the standoffs. But if you're sure that’s not the issue, maybe look for any loose screws in the case. It might also help to unplug and then re-plug all the cables just to ensure a good connection.
