Why does my PC smell like plastic even when it’s off?

I've noticed that my PC emits a noticeable plastic smell, even when it's been turned off for days. This summer's heat has intensified the smell, which is strong enough to be detected from about half a meter away. My PC has had a slight odor since I got it, but it seems much worse now. I suspect the source might be coming from the motherboard rather than the power supply, but I'm not completely sure. I've already checked for any plastic coverings I might have missed, but didn't find anything.

Many products release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which can smell plastic-y, particularly when they get hot. If you're sensitive to smells, it might just be the case that the heat is causing more of this off-gassing. It’s fairly normal, but if it’s strikingly strong, it's worth investigating further.

It’s common for electronics to emit odors, especially if they’re new or getting a bit older. Have you checked whether you removed the plastic protector between the CPU cooler and the CPU? Sometimes, those can get missed, and they definitely emit a smell when heated up.

Just a thought: ozone generators can cause plastics to off-gas. If you have one nearby, that could be influencing the smell.

If the smell is reminiscent of burning plastic, it might indicate a failing capacitor on your motherboard. Check for any bulging or leaking capacitors as they can emit a distinctive odor. Cleaning out the case and fans can also help eliminate burnt dust smells.

Have you cleaned inside your PC recently? Sometimes, debris or a slow melting plastic piece can be the culprit. Doing a thorough clean-up might reveal the problem.

Are you using a high-end GPU, like an Nvidia 4080? If so, ensure everything's connected properly. A loose connection can lead to extra heat and smells.
