Why does my power button fail to work but the screwdriver works fine?

I recently rebuilt my PC after replacing the motherboard, and I'm having trouble getting the power button to work. I initially thought it was the power supply, but after getting a new one and installing the new motherboard, I still ran into this problem. While I do have standby power, pressing the power button does nothing. Interestingly, when I short the power pins directly with a screwdriver, the PC powers on without any issues. I've checked the polarity of the connections, and everything seems to be plugged in correctly. What could be preventing the power button from functioning properly?

It's possible that the power button itself is simply malfunctioning. However, keep in mind that the switch usually doesn’t have a polarity, so that shouldn't be causing the issue. Just check to see if there’s any visible damage or if it’s properly connected.

Actually, there can be a positive and negative wire associated with it. I checked my manual, and it specified that, so it’s worth making sure those are connected correctly.

The power button and the screwdriver essentially do the same thing: they connect the two pins to close the circuit. If the screwdriver works but the button doesn’t, it's likely that the power button is broken, one of the wires is disconnected, or there’s an issue with the connections. It’s worth checking those wires again!
