Why Does My Samsung S22 Ultra Only Charge When USB-C Cable Is One Way Up?

I'm having a strange issue with my Samsung S22 Ultra. The USB-C port seems mostly clean, but it only charges when the side with the A orientation is facing up. No matter what cable I try, flipping it around stops the charging. Isn't USB-C supposed to be reversible? Can someone help me understand what's going on here?

It sounds like you might be dealing with a bit of a quirky problem. When you plug in a USB-C cable, you usually have a 50/50 chance of it working no matter which side you use. If marking one side always makes it work, there might be an issue with your port.

Yeah, definitely sounds like a gamble! Have you tried any other USB-C devices to see if the cable or your phone is the actual issue?

You might want to check if your USB-C port is messed up. It's possible that some pins, particularly on the B side, could be damaged or not functioning. That would explain why only one orientation works. If you have access to another USB-C device, try it out to see if the problem persists.

One thing to note is that the middle D+ and D- pins on a male plug aren't mirrored like you’d expect. If any of those pins are damaged in your phone’s port, it could cause the behavior you're seeing, where only one side seems to work. Have you tried using a USB-C PD charger? Those should bypass some of these issues assuming it’s not an old quick charge setup.
