Why Does My Samsung SSD Keep Losing Space?

I recently got a Samsung 990 PRO 2TB SSD, and for the past week or so, I've noticed it keeps showing up as empty despite the files being installed on it. It appeared to be fixed temporarily, but it's happening again. I find it frustrating to constantly redownload everything. Is this a mechanical failure, or could it be something else? I'm not even sure how to check if the drive is split into partitions. Has anyone else experienced this? Any help would be appreciated!

It sounds like a graphical glitch in Windows. Try opening the command prompt and typing "E:" (assuming that’s your SSD drive letter), then run "dir" to see if you can access your files that way. If that works, it might just be Windows acting up. If not, check the event viewer for any disk errors.

Before deciding to return it, consider where you purchased the SSD. I've heard of counterfeit drives that claim to be 2TB but are actually smaller. When they hit their limit, they start deleting files. If you bought it from a reputable source, this might not be the case for you, but it's good to check!

I bought it from Finland’s biggest electronics store, so I’m pretty sure it’s legit. But I'll remember to perform some tests in case.

Have you considered running H2testw? It's a tool that can help verify the actual capacity of your SSD and check for any issues. If it's a hardware defect, you'll want to know sooner rather than later.

I’ll try that! It's worth checking just to be safe.

Have you checked if your 2TB drive is split into multiple partitions? Sometimes that can cause confusion with available space. If it is, maybe just the partition management is messing things up. You could use a tool to analyze what's happening with your drive.

Yeah, I had a similar issue. You can check partitions by going into Disk Management in Windows. It’ll show you how your SSD is divided.

If you're unsure, you could also use a program like MiniTool or GParted to get a better look.
