I've built my own PC and I'm facing an issue with my secondary hard drive, which seems to randomly disappear from my system. It started happening more frequently and the drive is often not recognized for extended periods. To give you some details, my setup includes an ASUS motherboard and I'm running a 13th Gen Intel i9 processor with two hard drives: the main one being a 1TB Western Digital and the secondary, a 2TB Kingston drive. I've tried various troubleshooting steps like restarting the system, checking connections, adjusting BIOS settings, and updating drivers, but nothing has worked. Sometimes the drive shows up in Device Manager, but often it doesn't appear in File Explorer or Disk Management. I'm really at a loss for what to do next, especially given the tech who set it up warned me against installing software on the secondary drive. Any insights or advice would be really appreciated!

Have you tried reseating the SATA cable at both ends? Unplug it from the drive and motherboard, then reconnect them securely. Also, double check the connections to your PSU; make sure the power cable is dedicated solely to the drive. It’s worth looking into if the SATA cable is faulty, so maybe swap it out if you can. Additionally, checking your BIOS settings to ensure the drives are recognized can be really helpful! You might also want to adjust your power settings in Windows to prevent the OS from turning off the drive after a period of inactivity. Setting the hard disk to never turn off can help with detection issues. Lastly, consider running Kingston’s SSD manager to see if there’s a firmware update that could resolve this.
No problem! Let me know how it goes after you try that.
Sounds like you’ve done quite a bit of troubleshooting already! If reseating the cables doesn’t help, maybe try booting into BIOS and check if both drives are recognized there. Sometimes power management settings can make drives appear and disappear randomly, so it might be worth checking those. Also, I’ve found that using a different SATA port can sometimes do the trick if you suspect there’s a hardware issue with the current port.
Thanks, I’ll definitely try connecting it to a different SATA port. Can't hurt to give it a shot!

Thanks for these tips! I hadn't thought about adjusting the power settings. I always worry about the drives getting powered down, so I’ll look into that.
