Why Does My SSD Crash During Large Downloads?

I've been experiencing a frustrating issue with my 2TB T-Force Vulcan SATA SSD. I use it for all my games and sometimes for storing songs and photos. Lately, when I try to transfer large files (100GB and up), whether transferring from a thumb drive, another internal drive, or downloading from the internet, my Windows Explorer crashes right at the end of the transfer (within the last few MB). This has happened more than six times now and it's really annoying since I have to restart Explorer from the task manager each time. I've been told I might need to request an RMA, but I'm not in a position to buy another SSD to back everything up—especially with current NAND prices. I suspect the lack of DRAM in the SSD could be contributing to this. I'm hoping someone can help me understand what's going on, suggest a fix (if there's one available), and maybe point out some budget-friendly alternatives for SSDs if necessary. Thanks!

It sounds like your SSD might be struggling with large transfers due to its lack of DRAM, which can really impact performance during heavy loads. When the buffer fills up, the drive might not process the final MBs efficiently, leading to crashes. Have you checked the firmware of your SSD? Sometimes updating it can improve stability. Also, running a disk check can help identify any underlying issues. As for finding a cheap SSD, keep an eye on sales or look for refurbished drives, which can sometimes be a good deal without compromising too much on performance.

Before diving into expensive options, you might want to try adjusting some settings in Windows. Make sure your SSD is not set to sleep during downloads; that can definitely cause issues. Also, consider using a different file transfer method—like a third-party app—to see if that makes a difference. If you’re okay with a bit of risk, you could even try manually managing your storage to keep some space free, which might help with the file writes. But overall, I feel you on the SSD prices right now; it’s tough to find deals!
