I'm trying to install Linux Mint MATE on my older machine using an 80GB hard drive, previously occupied by Windows 7. I thought I was clear to overwrite the existing system, and I even chose to install "additional codecs" during the graphic installation. To my surprise, after the installation, I received a warning stating that only about 60MB of space remains on the drive. According to Mint's FAQ, they suggest a minimum of 20GB and recommend 100GB for installation, which seems like a significant difference. I used an ISO from about five years ago, but I assumed the basic requirements would still hold. Has anyone else faced this issue?

The reason Mint recommends 100GB is to accommodate not just the OS itself, but also room for applications and updates. While 20GB is the minimal space needed for the OS, it’s not realistic to think you’ll have much left over for installing other software. So while 80GB could technically work now, keep in mind you'll fill it up pretty quickly if you add more programs down the line!
It might also be that there are unused partitions on your drive that are taking up space without you realizing it. Have you checked for those? It might be worth investigating to free up additional space.
