Why is Chrome using so much CPU and memory on my PC?

I'm having serious performance issues with Chrome that I just can't seem to shake off. Even with just a few tabs open and while using the inspect element feature, Chrome freezes up and starts hogging my CPU—sometimes hitting 95% and gobbling up more than 60-70% of memory. Interestingly, when I open the task manager, I see the CPU usage drop almost immediately.

I've already disabled all startup apps and I'm running a licensed version of Windows 11 Pro. I did a fresh install, and I've also tried using Ubuntu, but the lag persists. Since I'm in digital advertising, I can't use adblockers and need to keep an eye on websites with ads for my work and do some light troubleshooting with network calls.

Here are my PC specs:
- 16GB DDR4 RAM
- RTX 2060
- i5-6400
- 1TB Crucial Ballistix SSD

My C and D drives have about 50% of space free, and I'm on the latest Windows update with no viruses detected. Chrome processes keep showing up in the task manager, often numbering around 125, which drives me crazy. Anyone have any ideas on how to deal with this?

This seems to be a common issue! Have you checked if any specific extensions are causing this? Sometimes it's just one rogue extension that's making your experience miserable. If it’s already a known issue, it might be helpful to keep an eye on community forums for any updates or patches. I had to go through this too!

Wow, 125 Chrome processes? That's quite a few! Sounds like you might have some extensions causing these high resource usages. Try disabling any lesser-known extensions one by one, and see if that helps. Sometimes they can reopen Chrome instances and cause issues like this, especially if they're not thoroughly tested by the developer. Let us know what you find out!

Totally agree! Extensions can be sneaky. I had a similar issue and found that one of my extensions was the culprit that was slowing everything down.
