Why is it important to upgrade Fedora even without using the default DE?

I'm currently using the XFCE Fedora spin and switched to Hyprland, using it all the time, while I've never installed or used GNOME before. I'm wondering what the benefits are of upgrading from Fedora 40 to either 41 or 42. I've noticed that DNF doesn't list GIMP 3.0, and I'm guessing that's related to package availability after an upgrade. Can someone break down the reasons for upgrading?

GIMP is an interesting reason to consider an upgrade, but it’s more about overall improvements and updates that come with new versions. If you really need GIMP 3.0, appimages are always an option too!

Exactly! It was more about noticing that the newer packages weren't easily accessible on older versions.

Newer kernel versions and backend packages are key reasons to upgrade. While Fedora 40 will still get updates for a little while, don’t wait too long because the transition will be smoother if you upgrade sooner rather than later.

Less than a month is still close! Better start planning my update.

Fedora 40 is reaching its end of life soon, meaning no more updates or security patches after May. Because of that, you won’t see major upgrades for software like GIMP 3.0 unless you find a backported package. It’s generally good practice to keep your system current to avoid compatibility issues in the future.

Thanks for the info! I wasn’t aware of the end-of-life timeline for Fedora 40—it helps a lot!

That's definitely something to consider. I once waited too long to upgrade and it was a hassle to get back on track.

Upgrading is super important for security updates, bug fixes, and getting access to more features and packages. If you stick with an older version like Fedora 40, you're putting yourself at risk since it reaches its end of life soon and won't receive security updates or patches. You should upgrade in order – first to F41 before moving on to F42, but skipping versions is possible if you prefer.

You're right about security! Just last week, a big forum got hacked because they were using outdated software. Staying up to date is essential!

Appreciate the clarification on upgrading order. I need to be more proactive about system updates!

Remember, the OS you use is separate from the desktop environment. Regular updates keep your system secure and stable, regardless of whether you're using XFCE or another DE. If you wait too long to upgrade, you might end up needing a fresh install to get back on track. It's best to stay current!
