Why is Linux so laggy on my high-end VM setup?

I'm trying to run Linux on a virtual machine (VM) on my high-end PC, but it becomes almost unusable due to stuttering, despite allocating plenty of resources. My setup includes a 10-core i5-14400F processor, and I've allocated 8 of those cores to the VM, along with 16GB of RAM from a total of 32GB, and 4GB of video memory from my 10GB RTX 3080. I'm currently using Bodhi Linux, known for being lightweight. My host OS is Windows 11, which I suspect might be causing issues. I've already optimized my VM according to various online guides, disabled certain settings, and installed VMware Tools inside the VM, but nothing seems to work. Is it possible that my motherboard is causing this problem, or could it just be compatibility issues with Windows 11? Have others faced this same issue?

It sounds like you're hitting some compatibility issues. You're definitely not alone; many users face lag with VMs on Windows 11, especially with certain configurations. Consider trying out well-established distros like Ubuntu or Debian instead of Bodhi, as they tend to have better support. Also, different virtualization software can yield different results. Have you thought about testing it with VirtualBox instead of VMware? Sometimes the hypervisor can make all the difference.

There are a ton of variables here. Your specs seem solid, but I'm curious about the virtualization software. You mentioned using VMware; did you install VMware Tools correctly? If your VM is launching but stuttering, it could indicate a missing or outdated guest additions package. Try resetting some settings and see if that helps, or consider switching to VirtualBox as a test.

It's not uncommon for users to experience stuttering on high-end PCs with certain setups. I suggest checking your VM settings in VMware to ensure that everything is configured optimally. Since you're using a lightweight distro, I'd also keep an eye on Windows 11 updates—some have been known to interfere with virtualization. Maybe consider dual-booting if the VM issues persist.
