Why is my car connecting to a random WiFi network?

I've been noticing something strange with my car over the last couple of days. It's automatically connecting to a WiFi network that I don't recognize or pay for. My phone shows this network as locked and identifies it with a private, rotating address when I bring it close to the car.

This issue just started, and I didn't have any WiFi functionality when I bought the car a few months ago (it's a used vehicle). I'm a bit worried, especially since I've heard some scary stories about privacy invasions. Is it possible that something malicious is going on here? If anyone has insights or ideas about how I can find out what's happening, I'd really appreciate it!

To troubleshoot, check your car's WiFi settings to see if you can find the network it keeps connecting to. Try forgetting it if possible. It's also worth checking your hotspot settings on your phone to make sure there's no interference or confusion there.

I checked and even when my phone is nearby, the car still connects on its own. I found the password in the car settings, and it’s strange because I’ve had this car for months without any WiFi issues before.

You might want to experiment by turning off your car and seeing whether the network still appears on your phone. If the network disappears when the car is off and then comes back when it’s on, that would indicate it’s remembering something. You could also check for any feature like Hotspot 2.0 in the advanced WiFi settings.

It sounds like your car might have saved the WiFi credentials from the previous owner! Sometimes people forget to remove their home WiFi info when they sell or trade in a car. If your car is connecting without you needing to do anything, it’s likely just recalling this info.

As for privacy concerns, I can understand the worries! Just make sure your phone is secure, and check the car’s settings and connections regularly. Also, if your car's WiFi connects to the internet, you wouldn’t have to pay extra; it just uses local networks like any other device. You might want to check with a mechanic or the dealership if it still seems sketchy.

Exactly! It’s likely just connecting to a network it remembers from when the previous owner had it. Just to be safe, maybe look for a way to reset the network settings in your car to clear any unwanted connections.

If the network doesn’t show while the car is off, it might still be connected to a nearby network when it’s parked. If you’re really concerned, consider resetting the car’s network settings to clear any saved connections.
