So, here's the situation: I shut down my laptop for a few hours like I've done many times before, and when I come back, it now requires a password to log in. Neither my mom nor I set one, and we've never really used a password before—usually, we just hit the sign-in button. I tried hitting Enter without typing anything, but that didn't work. The hint on the screen says 'name123,' but that didn't work either, even when I tried it in caps. The 'reset password' button told me I needed a USB to do that. Earlier today, we did a Microsoft authentication thing on our phones, but I'd closed the laptop a few times after that. This laptop is about 10 years old, and honestly, both my mom and I are not great with tech. Any help would be hugely appreciated!

You could try some variations like yourname123, momsname123, or even your pet's name. If you have access to another PC, you could create a bootable Windows USB to reset the password. It sounds daunting, but it's usually straightforward if you follow a step-by-step tutorial. Microsoft’s MediaCreationTool could be a one-click solution too!
Just checking—what kind of login screen does it show? Is it the usual Windows one or does it look different with a black screen and a small dialog box?

It would also help to know which version of Windows you’re using—7, 8, 10, or 11? Sometimes it could be something minor that might’ve triggered this, but with an older system, there’s also the chance it could be a virus at play.
Have you got another PC to use? There's some software you can put on a USB that helps remove the password to get back into Windows. I've helped many folks with it, and it's free! Just let me know if you need any assistance with it.
Unfortunately, we don't have access to another PC.
It looks regular to me, just the usual login screen.
