Why is my CPU overheating during gaming?

I've been experiencing some major issues with my PC overheating. I was playing Ark Ascended, which I play regularly, when my computer suddenly crashed. After rebooting, I checked the hardware monitor and saw my CPU temperature peak at 99°C. It held that temperature for a while before crashing again and I received a CPU overheat warning. After that, I turned it back on, checked the fan, disabled Wallpaper Engine, and tried running Ark again, but the temp hit 98°C again. I decided to test other games like Space Marine 2 and Civ 7, which also got up to around 97°C, while older games like New Vegas and Bioshock ran just fine.

Nothing's changed with my setup. I upgraded to a 3060 and a new power supply about a year ago with no issues since then, and my CPU idles at approximately 42°C.

I'm using a Ryzen 5 2600x with the stock Wraith Stealth cooler, along with a Gigabyte 3060, Asus Prime B450M-A motherboard, and 16GB of 2400MHz RAM on a 500W 80+ EVGA PSU.

It sounds like you might need to clean your CPU cooler and potentially apply new thermal paste. Dust buildup can really hinder cooling efficiency, and if it's been a while since you last did a deep clean, it could be time to tackle that. When you open up your cooler, make sure to also check for any signs of wear on the thermal paste or cooler itself. Good luck!
