Why is my CPU so hot even when I’m not using it much?

I've got a 7th-gen Intel CPU (an i7 7700K) which I thought might be bottlenecking with my GPU during gaming. I recently ran a benchmark for Helldivers 2, a game that's tough on CPUs, and the usage stats were surprising: my GPU was running at 90-95%, while my CPU was around 70-75%. What baffles me is that while my GPU temps stay below 60°C, my CPU frequently hits 80°C, sometimes even reaching 90°C. I'm starting to worry this heat could be damaging my CPU. Despite living in a cold environment in Wisconsin, with temperatures below 68°F, my CPU still runs hot. I have an AIO cooler that I suspect might be old, but I don't think it's completely failing. Are 7th-gen Intel CPUs known for running hot?

It sounds like your AIO cooler might not be doing its job properly. First, check if the AIO fans are spinning and if you can hear the pump working. If everything seems fine, consider reapplying thermal paste because that can degrade over time. I had both a 6700K and a 10700K, and they never got anywhere near those temps!

Definitely make sure the AIO is working. If there’s no flow or cooling, you might just be pushing the limits there.

What's your AIO model? That could help us understand if it’s suited for your CPU. The specs can make a difference!

It could be that your cooler isn’t mounted correctly. If it’s loose, it won’t transfer heat effectively. Make sure everything is secure!

Have you ever changed the thermal paste? If it's been a while, I’d suggest replacing it to see if that helps with the temps. Sometimes it's the simplest fixes that work wonders!
