Why Is My Disk Space Shrinking Even After Deleting Files?

I'm using a budget notebook mainly for writing and browsing, and I'm noticing a weird issue with my disk space. Despite not having many files or games installed, the free disk space keeps decreasing. For instance, I recently saw it drop from 1 GB to only 645 MB of free space, even though I'm not downloading anything. I'm running Windows 11, so could it be that the system is automatically downloading files again after I delete them? My notebook is supposed to have 55 GB of usable space, but with all my apps and data, it seems I only have around 32.69 GB. I even used TreeSize to check, and it reports 37 GB of occupied space, which doesn't match what my system is saying. What could be causing this discrepancy, and how can I resolve it?

Just a heads up, Windows updates can take up a significant amount of space when downloading or unpacking. Make sure you have enough free space for the OS to function properly—1 GB isn’t really enough. Using programs like WizTree or WinDirStat can help you see where your space is going, but be careful when deleting files to avoid removing anything important.

Is there any way I can get rid of old Windows versions to free up some space?

Have you checked if you've emptied your recycling bin? Sometimes the files can linger there and still take up space.

Yeah, I did. It's empty now.
