Why is my iPhone 16 Plus overheating and dying so quickly?

I recently upgraded to an iPhone 16 Plus just three months ago, and I've loved it until now. The battery life is usually great—I can go 2-3 days without charging. However, after I charged it to 99% last night and went to bed, it was completely dead by morning, which shocked me.

During class today, I put my phone away for an hour and a half, only to find it was at 70% and extremely hot when I pulled it out. This scenario repeated during my next class, where it dropped to 50% while still being hot. I've checked the battery health, and it says 100%, but the phone isn't running the latest iOS update. I've already tried restarting it but nothing improved; it's at 17% now, and I haven't used it much today, typing this from my Mac. I'm planning to visit Spectrum later for help.

As a quick update, after visiting Spectrum, they suggested filing an insurance claim, but unfortunately, it was denied. I contacted Apple support, but they hadn't encountered anything like this either. They advised me to back up my phone on my Mac and consider a factory reset. I'm really puzzled about this situation!

Definitely get to the Genius Bar if things don't improve! Your situation isn't typical, as my 16+ has been trouble-free. There might be something else going on with your device, possibly hardware related.

It sounds like you might need to check your battery usage stats. Go to Settings > Battery > View All Battery Usage; it shows which apps are using the most juice. You could also disable Background App Refresh for apps you don't really need running all the time.

Have you checked what apps are running in the background? Sometimes, apps can cause the phone to heat up and drain battery. Try putting it in airplane mode at night to see if that helps. Also, adjust the screen brightness when you're not using it—little tweaks can make a difference.

Sorry to hear about your experience! A factory reset may help if the software is acting funny, but if it keeps overheating, it might be a sign of deeper issues. Make sure to back it up before resetting just in case!
