Why is my laptop showing high RAM usage with nothing running?

I have a Dell Latitude 5540 that I mainly use at home. It's a solid laptop for my needs, but recently I've been noticing that my RAM usage is really high when I'm idle, even with just one tab open in Brave. Right now, I'm seeing 58% of my RAM in use, which is a bit concerning. I have 15.7GB available, but 9.1GB is in use, and when I check the task manager, the numbers just don't add up. I even did a full drive clean and reinstalled Windows yesterday, and the situation hasn't improved. I'm not super tech-savvy, so I'm wondering if there's a lot of bloatware on my laptop. If that's the case, can I remove it myself, or should I go to a shop for help? Thanks for any insight!

Check out the RAMmap tool by Microsoft! It breaks down RAM usage and shows how much is actually in use versus reserved. It might help clarify why it's so high. And yeah, some of Dell's background apps can be RAM-hungry, so consider removing the ones you don’t use regularly.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely look into RAMmap to get a better picture.

Yeah, just like many have mentioned, a lot of background processes from Windows and Dell apps can eat up RAM. You could free up some space by removing bloatware and disabling unused startup services to improve performance without needing to go to a shop. Just make sure to check what you're removing first!

That makes sense! I’ll research what to safely remove.

You're seeing typical RAM usage; don't stress too much about it! Unless your laptop struggles during actual tasks, the system is managing resources as it should. If it feels smooth, you're probably okay without going to a shop. Just keep your drivers updated, and disable unnecessary startup apps.

It sounds like you're worrying too much about RAM usage! Windows is designed to use available RAM effectively, and having 8-10GB in use when idle isn't unusual, especially if you have background processes running. Your browser and the OS itself can reserve memory for various functions like updates or caching. It's normal for it to fluctuate. Just let your system manage it; if you haven't noticed any slowdowns, it's likely fine!

True! I run Windows 11 too, and I often see high RAM usage for no apparent reason. It's just how Windows optimizes performance!

You shouldn't need to micromanage RAM. If your laptop runs fine, just let it be! Remember, it's kind of like having a busy kitchen; the more you cook, the more space you use naturally.
