I booted up my PC today and noticed an unexpected "Activate Windows" watermark in the bottom-right corner of my screen. My computer has an OEM Windows license, and it has always activated automatically before, without any issues. I've reinstalled Windows multiple times in the past, and it has always detected the OEM key in the BIOS/UEFI right after installation, so I never even had to think about it.
The only recent hardware change I made was replacing the HDD with an SSD about two years ago, and even then, the activation went smoothly. I haven't switched out any other hardware—no motherboard changes or anything major that might cause Windows to recognize my setup as different.
I've tried several troubleshooting steps, including running the Windows activation troubleshooter, checking my Microsoft account, verifying that I'm still on the correct edition of Windows, and ensuring no recent updates have failed. However, nothing seems to resolve the issue, and Windows remains unactivated.
Has anyone else experienced an OEM key suddenly not working after years of being stable, especially without any recent hardware changes? I'm trying to figure out if this could just be a temporary glitch with Windows or if it requires manual fixing. Any advice or similar experiences would be great!

I worked on an Acer notebook this week that lost activation status after a firmware update. Have you done any firmware updates recently?
If you want to stay on the right side of things, definitely contact Microsoft support. But if you’re looking for a workaround, you could try finding activation methods online, though that might not be the most legitimate route.
Have you tried using the Windows Activation Wizard? It can sometimes help with problems like this.
I’ve seen this situation before—if you update the BIOS and install Windows around the same time, it can cause the activation key to disappear. One of them needs to have the key to keep it working properly. It’s tricky!
