Why is my PC crashing when playing certain games like Elden Ring and Baldur’s Gate 3?

I'm having persistent issues with my PC crashing while playing specific games, mainly Baldur's Gate 3 and Elden Ring. The crashes occur only with these demanding titles and not with older or less intensive games like Skyrim. The crashes can happen one to two times, but after that, I can play without problems until the next day or after the PC has been off for a while, which is really confusing. Usually, the game shows some FPS drops, then the screen freezes or turns black. Sometimes, the game just shuts down with a crash message, but the audio continues, leading me to suspect it might be a graphics card issue. Interestingly, crashes often happen after I close the game, not during gameplay. I once had a power cable for my old monitor break after a crash, though the cable to the graphics card seemed fine. My PC has an NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1660, and the drivers were last updated in September 2023, but I think they might be overdue for an update since the PC is about five years old.

Definitely check the GPU fans and their temperatures. If they're not functioning properly, it could lead to overheating and crashes. Also, NVIDIA drivers sometimes override your settings, so ensure everything is configured how you want it.

It sounds like your GPU might be overheating. You should check its temperature while gaming, especially during the crashes. Also, make sure you're using the latest drivers for the GTX 1660. Sometimes they can affect performance and cause issues if they aren't updated properly.

Have you checked your system memory? If you're running with only 8GB RAM, that could lead to crashes when playing demanding games. But since you mentioned you have 16GB, you should be alright there.
